Make a Difference

I met Sara back in April at a foster parent recruiting event at her church. She and her mom, Tara, approached me after our presentation on foster care ministry, and asked if they could give me a donation for Crossroads. While her mom got her checkbook out, Sara shared that she’d been selling her toys to raise money to help kids in foster care. Her mom then handed me a check for $22-Sara’s $11 from her toy sales, and another $11 matching donation from her mom.

Sara with her forever sister Alyson!

I was amazed by such big generosity from such a young girl, so I followed up with Tara to get more of the story: Sara was the first in their family to pray for children who needed families. They started the foster parent certification process, and Sara kept praying. As is the case for many, their family faced a number of challenges along the way, but in April 2015, after fostering her for 18 months, they adopted Alyson, Sara’s younger sister. Since then, Sara has continued to look for ways to care for kids in need, specifically those in foster care, and this is what prompted her to start selling her toys and give the money to Crossroads NOLA.

I’ve thought about Sara’s story many times since that Sunday afternoon, and have shared it with others on more than one occasion. Her BIG faith continues to amaze me. Looking at the big picture, at all the needs of the foster care system, or even just one child in care, $22 seems like barely a drop in the bucket. But Sara’s story reminds me of how God uses big faith to do great things with our limited resources.

If we’re going to see success in making real and lasting changes in the foster care system, we definitely need people willing to make significant financial investments in this work.  But even more, we need people with big faith like Sara’s, who trust God to do what only He can do with what they have to give.

You can make a difference in the lives of kids in foster care. Yes, you. Regardless of your age, schedule, finances, abilities – if God is calling you, he’s going to equip you, and you can be a part of what he’s doing to bring hope and healing to hurting kids in our city and beyond.

We’d love to have you consider supporting Crossroads NOLA. Your donations make it possible for us to recruit and support safe, loving families. Your prayers pave the way. Your volunteerism buoys our work.

Thank you for partnering with us!
